Gas Stoichiometry: STP

When it comes to working out the mass, amount or volume of a gaseous substance in isolation or in a reaction, you have to consider the properties of temperature and pressure.

The first part of this tutorial on gas stoichiometry will focus on calculating the volume (in dm3 or litres), amount in moles and mass in grams of gaseous substances in isolation or within a reaction at standard temperature and pressure (STP). … More Gas Stoichiometry: STP

Same Stuff: Slightly Different Name

Those of you who have been following my blog since the beginning (which seems long ago but was actually less than a year ago) may notice a slight difference on the site and the associated social media pages. I have decided to change the name of the blog to ‘Science and Joe’.

This new name is meant to reflect the majority of the content on this blog (i.e. sciencey stuff). However, I will also be writing some lifestyle posts, mainly about being a mature student and how I’m trying to lead a healthier and more balanced life.

Welcome to ‘Science and Joe’: it’s the same house with a new front door. … More Same Stuff: Slightly Different Name

En Route to Better Things: A Science Festival and a More Positive Outlook

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a science festival in which some amazing individuals shared their work and thoughts to an audience of proud science geeks. I found each talk so inspiring and it has prompted me to think even more about the broad range of career options available in clinical, laboratory and other environments.

Limiting and Excess Reactants

In this first part of the third tutorial of the trio of tutorials on stoichiometry on this blog, we are going to be going through: what a limiting reactant is and how to identify one in a chemical reaction; how to calculate the amount of product produced using a certain amount of a limiting reactant and how to identify the excess reactant and work out how much excess is left over from a chemical reaction. … More Limiting and Excess Reactants
